  {"id":1933,"date":"2016-01-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/blogtest\/construction-update-3\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T16:06:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T21:06:15","slug":"construction-update-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/president\/construction-update-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 20px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Numerous campus\u00a0construction projects\u00a0are ongoing or were\u00a0recently completed.\u00a0Here is a brief update\u00a0on those recent and\u00a0current projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Davis Science and Wiser-Patten Science<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Substantial completion is planned\u00a0by late fall for this crucial renovation\u00a0project, costing approximately $20\u00a0million. The new and returning\u00a0occupants will move in late fall and\u00a0over the holiday break before the\u00a0spring 2017 semester. A new connector\u00a0between the two buildings\u2014the Strobel\u00a0Lobby\u2014will create a central entrance\u00a0for both buildings and will provide ADA\u00a0accessibility within both buildings. The\u00a0new connector structure is complete,\u00a0and the exterior skin is being installed.<\/p>\n<p>Wiser-Patten building construction is\u00a0well underway with finishes beginning.\u00a0Three-quarters of all mechanical, electrical,\u00a0and plumbing work is complete\u00a0in Wiser-Patten, and the new elevators\u00a0will be installed in February. The lab\u00a0casework starts this March. Occupants\u00a0of the buildings will include Physics,\u00a0Anthropology, and Forensic Science.<\/p>\n<p>Davis Science Building walls are being\u00a0renovated, and mechanical and plumbing\u00a0work is about 50 percent complete.\u00a0Occupants of the buildings will include\u00a0Academic Advising, Geosciences, and\u00a0new Mechatronics labs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adams Tennis Complex<\/strong><br \/>\nLast summer, the City of Murfreesboro\u00a0and MTSU officials unveiled the\u00a0long-anticipated Adams Indoor Tennis\u00a0Complex, an eight-court facility that\u00a0greatly enhances the Blue Raider tennis\u00a0program while increasing playing\u00a0and tournament opportunities for\u00a0area residents. The new $6.2 million,\u00a070,000-square foot complex, located\u00a0at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro, is\u00a0the latest partnership between the\u00a0city, MTSU, and the nonprofit Christy-Houston Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The complex sports eight indoor tennis\u00a0courts, two electronic scoreboards,\u00a0a pro shop, and a lounge area with a\u00a0mezzanine for spectator viewing. The\u00a0Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation\u00a0Department operates the facility,\u00a0allowing Blue Raider tennis practices\u00a0and matches to take place from\u00a0November until March while also\u00a0providing opportunities for the city\u00a0to host other tournaments throughout\u00a0the year.<\/p>\n<p>The new facility gives the Murfreesboro\u00a0community\u2014including MTSU staff and\u00a0faculty\u2014more opportunities to watch\u00a0the Blue Raiders in action without\u00a0traveling to Nashville.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Middle Tennessee Boulevard Widening<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Construction on the widening of Middle\u00a0Tennessee Boulevard is starting this\u00a0January following the award of the\u00a0construction bid to Jarrett Builders Inc.,\u00a0by the City of Murfreesboro. The project\u00a0is designed to improve traffic flow and\u00a0safety along the edge of campus,\u00a0with the introduction of bike paths,\u00a0additional signalized crossings at Lytle\u00a0and Division, improved lighting, and\u00a0landscaped medians and turn lanes in\u00a0the center.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic calming features are key\u00a0components to the project to support\u00a0pedestrian safety in the area. Pedestrian\u00a0safety is a paramount concern of the\u00a0project team, and pedestrians crossing\u00a0the road are encouraged to exercise\u00a0extreme caution.<\/p>\n<p>Construction will begin on the section\u00a0south of the culvert at Sinking Creek.\u00a0Two-way traffic will be maintained at\u00a0all times throughout the course of the\u00a0project, planned for approximately 30\u00a0months. Entrances to the campus will\u00a0be maintained at Greenland Drive,\u00a0Faulkinberry, and Bell Street.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Murfreesboro and MTSU\u00a0will provide periodic construction\u00a0status updates and notifications about\u00a0any changes to the traffic flow or\u00a0pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Livestock Center Parking Lot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Plans are underway to pave and restripe\u00a0the Livestock Center parking lot and\u00a0provide improved traffic and shuttle\u00a0bus circulation, improved lighting, and\u00a0drainage in the area, as well as a widened\u00a0pedestrian walk to the lot. Construction is\u00a0expected to begin this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Miller Education Center Renovation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The renovation of the Miller Education\u00a0Center (MEC), formerly the Bell Street\u00a0Center, is complete and is open for\u00a0the start of spring semester. The center\u00a0is an approximately two-minute drive\u00a0from the edge of campus, located\u00a0located between Greenland Drive\u00a0and Bell Street at Highland. New\u00a0occupants include the Jennings A.\u00a0Jones College of Business Center for\u00a0Executive Education, the University\u00a0College, the Center for Counseling and\u00a0Psychological Services, and the Center\u00a0for Chinese Music and Culture.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese cultural center is the\u00a0result of a $1 million grant provided by\u00a0Hanban Confucius Institute in Beijing,\u00a0an organization sponsored by China\u2019s\u00a0education ministry that oversees more\u00a0than 440 institutes in 120 countries. In\u00a0collaboration with our sister university,\u00a0Hangzhou, the new center will promote\u00a0music as a vital element in education\u00a0and understanding of Chinese people\u00a0and culture. It will also become another\u00a0component of our extremely successful\u00a0international outreach, which has\u00a0earned MTSU recognition as a leader in\u00a0global studies.<\/p>\n<p>The MEC renovation includes upgrades\u00a0to a meeting space on the second\u00a0floor adjacent to the central atrium.\u00a0The meeting space will accommodate\u00a0flexible seminars for 60 occupants,\u00a0or approximately 145 occupants for\u00a0special events. In addition, there are\u00a0offices for University Police and Events\u00a0Coordination.
