Music, Piano Performance Concentration, B.M.

The Piano Performance Concentration within the Bachelor of Music degree at the MTSU School of Music (College of Liberal Arts) offers comprehensive training for pianists pursuing professional careers and advanced study. The program emphasizes both solo and collaborative performance while developing a broad set of skills for diverse professional opportunities.

Students develop a strong musical foundation through coursework in music theory, aural skills, and music history, alongside focused private instruction and weekly studio classes. These experiences provide regular performance opportunities and individualized feedback from both peers and faculty. Students collaborate extensively with vocalists and instrumentalists in duo and mixed chamber ensemble settings, and can perform with large ensembles such as Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Symphonic Band. Additionally, students may choose to participate in the annual Tom Naylor Solo Artist Competition.

The Piano Performance Concentration also includes an Undergraduate Certificate in Piano Pedagogy. This integrated program equips students with practical, hands-on teaching experience through coursework in piano pedagogy, group piano pedagogy, and piano literature.

Alumni have also gone on to build multifaceted careers in performance, collaboration, education, and related fields, with some holding full-time teaching positions at respected universities in the United States and abroad. Graduates have been accepted into leading master's programs throughout the country, with substantial scholarships and assistantships at institutions including the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the University of Houston, Florida State University, the University of Colorado–Boulder, and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Students regularly participate in national and international summer festivals as well, including the Brevard Music Festival, AIMS in Austria, and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, and have earned recognition in competitions such as the MTNA Tennessee Young Artist Competition, the TMTA Collegiate Solo Competition, and the Singapore International Music Competition, among others.

Students in the program work closely with distinguished faculty who are active and versatile artists, educators, and clinicians. Trained at leading national and international institutions, faculty maintain dynamic professional careers that include solo and collaborative performance, teaching, adjudication, and masterclasses, bringing a high level of artistry and mentorship to the program.

Admission to the Piano Performance Concentration program requires a successful piano audition.
