  {"id":64,"date":"2024-11-04T16:56:06","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T16:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/waterworks\/?page_id=64"},"modified":"2026-05-04T05:05:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T05:05:40","slug":"stream-assessments","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/waterworks\/stream-assessments\/","title":{"rendered":"Stream Assessments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) 305(b) report documents the general quality of surface waters in Tennessee.&nbsp; It contains information about streams, lakes, and wetlands, and identifies streams that are currently posted due to fish contamination and\/or elevated bacteria levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/environment\/water\/documents\/wr_wq_report-305b-2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">View 2014 305(b) report.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Streams and lakes in Tennessee are ranked based on five use support categories, for seven designated uses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Designated uses:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fish and aquatic life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recreation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irrigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Livestock watering and wildlife<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domestic water supply<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial water supply<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use support categories:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Waters are fully supporting of all designated uses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waters are fully supporting of some designated uses, but have not been assessed for all uses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waters are not assessed for any use due to insufficient or outdated data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waters are impaired but a TMDL has not been completed or is not required. Split into three subcategories:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>impaired waters that have already had all necessary TMDLs approved by EPA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>imparied waters do not require TMDL development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>impaired waters in which the impacts are not caused by a pollutant.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waters have been monitored and found to not meet one or more water quality standards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TDEC&#8217;s Division of Water Supply<\/strong>\u00a0has a groundwater quality report that is helpful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TDEC&#8217;s Division of Water Pollution Control<\/strong>\u00a0has a proposed list of impaired Tennessee waters, called the 303(d) list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Water<\/strong>\u00a0has numerous water resources of all kinds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) 305(b) report documents the general quality of surface waters in Tennessee.&nbsp; It contains information about streams, lakes, and wetlands, and identifies streams that are currently posted due to fish contamination and\/or elevated bacteria levels.
